What You Should Know About a Prostate Exam

For Men’s Health Month, we are focusing on the importance of a prostate exam in Jacksonville, NC.

The prostate is a walnut-shaped gland below the bladder and in front of the rectum. As part of the male reproductive system, this gland promotes semen production and supports sperm health.

Unfortunately, prostate cancer remains one of the most common cancers among men.

At Coastal Carolina Internal Medicine P.A., we are here to assure you that although prostate cancer is serious, it’s also very treatable. Prostate cancer often develops slowly, but early detection and intervention is still key. Because of this, we encourage patients to receive routine prostate exams at our health clinic.

Here’s what you should know about a prostate exam.

What is a prostate exam?

A prostate exam involves inserting a lubricated, gloved finger into your rectum to feel your prostate for any abnormalities. Your provider will assess for any lumps, bumps, enlargements, masses, or vaults that could indicate cancerous growths.

Does a prostate exam hurt?

We understand that this doesn’t sound like the most comfortable appointment. However, most men find it tolerable and not painful. Let your provider know if you’re worried about pain, and we can discuss management options.

Additionally, a prostate exam only lasts a few seconds. So any discomfort that you experience should be over before you really notice it.

When should I get a prostate exam?

We recommend most men start getting annual prostate exams starting at the age of 50. However, factors like a family history of prostate cancer or certain ethnicities may increase your risk, in which case we may recommend starting annual visits earlier, such as at the age of 45.

What other men’s health services do you offer?

For men’s health, we offer a range of services that address common issues and concerns. During your consultation, we can discuss erectile dysfunction treatments and hormonal imbalance services. We also recommend seeing one of our providers to check your blood pressure and cholesterol.
